Especially for those unfamiliar:
Mr. Shipp is truly one of the leading lights of a new generation of jazz giants. He has reached the holy grail of jazz in that he possesses a unique style that is all his own—and he’s one of the few in jazz that can say so today.
"It's free-jazz, but full of melody, and every sound counts." (****) - John Fordham, The Guardian, guardian.co.uk/music/2012/dec/13/matthew-ship-floating-ice-review.
“The interaction of Shipp and Bisio by now has become a wonder. They intertwine around themselves in brilliant ways—“

“This duo is less about repertoire than rapport, though, and Shipp and Bisio have something truly special”. Reader
Having recorded over 40 albums as a leader or co-leader, Shipp has created pioneering work with hip-hop artists Antipop Consortium, DJ Spooky, and El-P, and has collaborated with notables such as Roscoe Mitchell (Art Ensemble of Chicago), William Parker and David S. Ware. Barking Legs Theater, Chattanooga, TN.
The buzz is in about his latest release “Signature” (a trio):
‘’Stunning lyricism—every track is a gem---modern music at its best ---one of the top 3 recordings Matthew Shipp has made.’’ Step Tempest.
‘’Yet another boundary –pushing set for ESP Disc titled ‘’Signature’’—Shipp and trio have arguably made their best record, a wild inventive sprawl of brain bending meditations and bold abstraction that show the trio on an astounding level only they occupy.’’ Brooklyn Rail.
Bios:
Matthew Shipp was born December 7, 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware. He started piano at 5 years old with the regular piano lessons most kids have experienced. He fell in love with jazz at 12 years old. After moving to New York in 1984 he quickly became one of the leading lights in the New York jazz scene. He was a sideman in the David S. Ware quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music.
In his unique and recognizable style, NYC pianist Matthew Shipp has recorded and performed vigorously from the late 1980s onward, creating music in which free jazz and modern classical intertwine. His approach to the piano reflects a concentrated blend of Thelonious Monk's phrasing and the improvised explorations of Cecil Taylor.
Shipp first became well known in the early 1990s as the pianist in the David S. Ware Quartet and Roscoe Mitchell's Note Factory group. Soon he began leading his own dates, most often including Ware and bassist William Parker.
Ware.
Michael Bisio returned to New York in 2006 after spending 30 years on the West Coast and quickly became an integral part of the New York City creative music community. Since 2009, he has been bass instructor at Bennington College and the defacto bassist for the Matthew Shipp Trio. Renowned for the quality of his bass tone and the intensity of his very personal musical language, with numerous jazz recordings to his credit.
His first international release, In Seattle (Silkheart), was chosen as one of the “Best Jazz Records of the 1980s” in The Village Voice, which he followed with Connections (CIMP) in 2005..
Other artist collaborations include Wayne Horvitz, Charles Gayle, Bob Nell, Sunny Murray, Louie Belogenis, John Tchai, Pauline Oliveros, Vinny Golia, Julian Priester, Eyvind Kang, Diedre Murray, Rashied Ali, Jim Nolet, Saadet Turkoz, Dominic Duval, Tomas Ulrich, Oluyemi Thomas, Matthew Shipp, Karl Berger, Warren Smith, Connie Crothers, Sonny Simmons, Jay Rosen, Avram Fefer, and Stephen Gauci.
The Creative Music Series (CMS) was established in January, 2015, to showcase the work of adventurous jazz musicians from out-of-state, presenting them in intimate venues in the Cambridge/Somerville area. My endeavor was a reaction to the apparent lack of invitations being extended to accomplished, new talent and even unknown musicians to the Boston area. CMS has now begun to zero in on Boston based musicians who are creating their own projects with these out-of-town guests, and taking these musical risks to find an expression and gain a wider appreciation.
