Russ is the leader of large groups like the Either/Orchestra and Lookie Lookie, but he loves to stretch out in the intimate jazz trio format too. With Blake Newman on the bass and Phil Neighbors at the drums, the RG Trio plays unusual selections from Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, Clifford Jordan and even the Grateful Dead.

Of a recent show, Jon Garelick wrote "The [January 13, 2018] show overall was immensely satisfying, with all manner of variety — emotionally, musically, in the solos and arrangements...[Gershon] plays beautifully, with great musicality — as a composer and bandleader sensitive to compositional details and arrangements.. Which is why his “reductions” of pieces for bigger bands worked so well.
