Allective: alluring, enticing.
Collective: An egalitarian and united group of musician/composers, in search of the musical high road.
The Allective Collective travels its own path, creating exciting, heartfelt, and truly unique music, grounded in jazz but drawing from a plethora of musical styles. Guitarist Phil Sargent and pianist John Funkhouser display an unusually broad palette of sonic colors from hair raising rock to Impressionistic oceans of sound to the gentlest whispers. Add to that singer Aubrey Johnson's equally varied range of expression, from wordless vocals, featuring dizzyingly intricate unisons with Sargent's guitar lines, to the most exquisitely sincere and moving deliveries of love songs, and you have an astoundingly versatile group, able to connect with their audience on many levels and deliver a truly outstanding performance....

The Allective Collective is:
• Aubrey Johnson, Berklee Voice Professor, is the most astounding singer to come through Boston since Luciana Souza, and (also like Luciana) a beautiful composer. Aubrey is the recipient of two Downbeat Student Music awards for "Best Jazz Vocalist" and has performed and/or recorded with Bobby McFerrin, Jimmy Cobb, Fred Hersch, Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, Mark Walker, the Fringe, and Darmon Meader (of the New York Voices).
• Phil Sargent, Boston's phenomenal guitarist and composer, who has recently been getting noticed playing with leaders Brooke Sofferman, Bruno Raberg, and Rick DiMuzio. His recent CD as leader A New Day was released in June 2010, receiving rave reviews like the following: "Brooding, thoughtful and emotionally resonant, guitarist Phil Sargent’s new album transcends the jazz label – although he’s backed up by a first-rate cast of jazz players. In the Top 10 jazz albums of 2010" - Lucid Culture, June 2010
"His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics." - David Kane, Cadence Music, December 2006
• The John Funkhouser Trio, (with Greg Loughman and Mike Connors) made Bob Young's list of the top 10 CDs of 2009 in the Boston Herald, and who have been getting some great reviews in the press and on the web for their 2010 CD Time. A couple of samples:
“…Positive and prophectic.…quiet yet persistent rhythmic counterpoint creating an artistry that is deep in its contemplative atmosphere. John plus group reveal musical moments of great power... Yet, the music contained therein has both a wistful and nostalgic mood with an undercurrent of remarkable and positive continuity which dominates throughout.” - George W. Carroll, NiteLifeExchange.com, December, 2009
"Funkhouser has an interest and background in a wide range of musical styles form classical to world music to avant garde to funk and rock - and this sense of wonder and love of a kaleidoscope of musical styles really manifests itself on this admirable release." - Brad Walseth, JazzChicago.net, March 2010
